Aurora BAKER is a two-dimensional artist working in acrylics, pencils, and pen and ink. Growing up in the San Diego area, she logged frequent museum visits from the time she was a small child, but relatively few art museums, at least at first. “My mom loved science,” Aurora explains, “and we would often attend the Museum of Man in Balboa Park. I became fascinated with the artifacts various cultures had created. I really wanted to know how each piece was created and why the artist had chosen do it that way. I think I realized from an early age that Art was the language spoken by the soul of each culture.” It was only natural that Aurora should pursue a degree in Art History, which she obtained in 1999 from The University of Arizona. Aurora has a keen eye for historical techniques and has continually experimented with new techniques and new approaches in her own work. Besides her work in her studio, Aurora’s techniques have been displayed on stage: she has been the scenic artist of record for many theatre productions, including producing an 18th century French interior and a contemporary New York skyline. While her work for the Theatre serves to bring a playwright’s vision to life, in the studio it’s her own vision, her own language that she seeks to bring to life. Her work is known for its often subtle juxtaposition of organic and geometric forms, unconventional use of iconography and an impeccable sense of color.
